Pronation is one of the most common health issues associated with feet and can lead to some well known foot problems such as flat feet, hammer toes, bunions, and widening of the fore foot.
Pronation is often a consequence of ankle instability, but can also result from prolonged standing, improper shoes, and genetics. In pronation, the foot arches are too weak to keep the foot bones in proper place, resulting in the bones dropping into a less than stable position. This causes increased stress on the entire foot and can also lead increased stress and pain in other parts of the body (legs, back, etc.).
Here are some questions for determining if you have pronation or may eventually suffer from pronation:
Do you have foot problems associated with Pronation (flat feet, bunions, hammer toes)?
Do you experience pain when running, walking, or standing?
Have you had injuries to your feet or ankles?
Is one of your legs shorter than the other?
Does your job require you to stand or walk on hard surfaces all day?
Do you have bow legs or “knock knees” (your legs angle inwards at the knees)?
Do you participate in sports played on hard surfaces?
Do your shoe heels wear out unevenly?
If any of these questions can be answered affirmatively, you should see your chiropractor about possible Pronation. Pronation can often be treated or prevented with orthotics or shoe inserts. Your chiropractor can give you the proper inserts to help you with your Pronation and also help you to deal with the underlying cause of the syndrome.
