STAGES OF CARE

It is important to understand the stages of chiropractic care because they are unique relative to those of other health-care disciplines. Because chiropractic addresses core physiological and biomechanical aspects of the body, the process to correct problems can take some time.

The following is a brief summary of the two major phases of chiropractic care and after care.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and overall management of conditions that are a result of mechanical dysfunction of the joints and muscles and their effects on the nervous system.

We all know that the body is capable of healing itself and we take the rapid healing of cuts, bruises, and broken bones for granted.

If, however, whether through accident or lifestyle, a joint or vertebra loses its normal mobility, this can affect the nervous system, and interfere with the natural healing process.

This in turn can lead to pain, discomfort, or even disease. Chiropractors restore full function to the affected joint, allowing the body to return more rapidly to its normal level of health.

Will It Help?

A Medical Research Council trial found chiropractic to be more effective than hospital out- patient treatment for low back pain.

  • Chiropractic can keep arthritic joints mobile, reducing pain and helping to slow further degeneration.
  • The therapy can be used on joints affected by repetitive strain injury ( RSI) to minimize stress on muscles, nerves, and tendons.
  • It can relieve neck pain, whiplash injuries, and may types of headache.
  • As well as treating sports injuries, chiropractors can carry out preseason checks to help athletes maintain optimum performance.

Treatment is individually tailored to each patient, and is therefore safe and suitable for pregnant women, babies and children.

Successful treatment of period pain, infantile colic, ‘glue ear,’ digestive problems, chronic fatigue syndrome, and other disorders is frequently reported.

Benefits

  • Relieves pain and improves general mobility.
  • Reduces spinal nerve stress, allowing the body’s own healing processes to improve and maintain health.
  • Suitable for everyone.

Relief Care

The majority of patients consult a chiropractor because they have an ache or pain. In the first phase of care, the main objective is to eliminate or reduce your discomfort and stabilize your condition in the shortest amount of time. During this phase, progress is usually rapid. The number of times you visit a chiropractor during this phase of care varies and is dependent upon your specific condition.

Rehabilitative Care

Once your condition has stabilized, you enter the second phase of care, where the objective is to correct any underlying injury or cause of discomfort, strengthen the muscles, and improve neuromusculoskeletal function. The frequency of office visits is reduced over a period of two to six weeks.

It is important to remember that many of the conditions for which people seek care have developed over many years; therefore, correcting these conditions takes time.

Once your discomfort has subsided, you may think all is well and choose to abandon your efforts. However, if you end your care before fully healing of the muscles and soft tissues, you can invite a relapse. This is a mistake many people make, and it sets them up for recurring health issues.

... After Care

After care includes maintaining your improved health, encouraging normal spinal function and preventing the return of the original condition.

You can then congratulate yourself on achieving your ultimate goal: optimal health and wellness!
